Redaction Free Font
Redaction is a multiplicity of typographic, legal, and human histories. The typeface was commissioned by Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts’ The Redaction exhibition at MoMA PS1.
Redaction is a typeface that seeks to capture the history and problems of the US criminal justice system. It is based on legal documents from claims filed by the Civil Rights Corps.
As a typeface, Redaction is meant to feel familiar, echoing Times New Roman and New Century Schoolbook (the typefaces of legal documents in the US), but with elements abstracted and heightened.
The digital “notches” in Redaction take inspiration from the degradation of letterforms that have been reproduced through faxing and photocopying.
Redaction fonts are available in 3 styles (Regular, Italic, Bold) and 7 grades of degradation for a total of 21 fonts. All fonts have full character sets for Latin-1 language support.
